Do We Need Superman?

Finally, I managed to catch this epic last Friday (yes, after so many months it released here in Malaysia).

Superman Returns is a movie of everyone waiting for. The man of steel superhero won many hearts since in the 70s, thanks to DC Comics for creating this mega superhero for everyone. The early years, Superman was played by the late Christopher Reeves. And yes, Brandon Routh a little resemblance of him, that is why Routh was the first choice by Bryan Singer, director of the movie.

Putting X-Men III script away to direct Superman Returns, was a choice that Singer hard to make since the X-Men was his baby from the begining. Nonetheless, realised his dream to bring Superman to silver screen was something that Singer could not turned down.

The movie kicks off with the absence of Superman for five years. World became chaotic, war everywhere and yes Lois Lane, the broken hearted journalist who in denial that she in love with Superman, wrote 'Why The World Doesn't Need Superman?' and won pulitzer prizes. But her mind changed again because she was saved by Superman. When come to think to this matter, logically, Superman always saved Lois Lane from any kind of disasters. But when Superman missing for several years, who is the one that save Lois Lane (ponder, ponder)? And then we introduced to ever menacing Lex Luthor (Kevin Spacey), who cheat widower's estate and embark on journey and find Superman sanctuary and steal the crystal that can help him conquer the world. So, we do need Superman after all.

Although the movis launches slow at the begining, but it engaging as it was progressed. The special effects are impressive, the story has an intriguing bittersweet quality and Brandon Routh acquits himself nicely as a more emotionally vulnerable Clark Kent/Superman. Stepping into such an iconic role is not easy, considering that the late Christopher Reeve remains for most of us the seminal Superman.

Kate Bosworth is a rather lackluster Lois Lane, and the romance is less than combustible. Kevin Spacey's comically villainous Lex Luthor is appropriately sneering and sardonic.

Overall, this movie is entertaining, engaging and yes more human. It is good to see Superman back to our life again but I hope that we will not see the newspaper headline 'Where Has He Gone?' again, for real! Up, Up and away!

The summer season is almost end and I've missed reviewing some of the movies, especially the one that I blogged about during productions. Anyhow, I'm going to give my 2 cents worth for fall release movie..
